Summer is just around the corner and that means, so is the season of sunglasses. While the world’s favourite (in our opinion) accessory is actually incredibly useful year-round, they’re even more important in the scorching summer months – it’s important to protect your eyes from those harsh UV-rays, particularly here in Australia!
So, if you’re currently on the hunt for a new pair of sunnies or in the mood to update your summer look, you’ve come to the right place.
Design is obviously a key factor in choosing the right pair of sunnies, but so are the quality and price, of course. So, we did a bit of hunting ourselves to find the perfect pair that hits the mark in all three categories
Walk into any fashion (or convenience) store and you’re sure to find a rack of sunglasses somewhere. Accessibility isn’t really an issue, but design, quality and price certainly are. Often sunglasses have two out of the three attributes. A really cool design and excellent quality but they’ll cost you an arm and a leg. Or fine design, decent price but the quality screams ‘temporary’. What we wanted to find was a well-designed pair of sunglasses that you’d feel confident wearing anywhere, made to last for more than one season and with a price tag that won’t completely break the bank. Is that too much to ask for? Well, turns out it’s not! Enter MESSYWEEKEND…
LIV — bold, classy & playful
MessyWeekend Copenhagen is a small but growing eyewear startup based in Copenhagen, Denmark. They have a pretty extensive line of sunglasses, but one pair in particular stands out from the rest: LIV. These sunglasses are simply gorgeous and come in four colourways: Black, Tortoise, Pink and the newest addition: Rosé.
1. Design-wise, we’re big fans. The Black model is fitted with dark green lenses, ideal for those scorcher days when the sun is extra blinding. The Tortoise model is your classic pair of sunnies, perfect for practically any occasion. The Pink model is bright and fun, adding a nice pop of colour while the Rosé colourway is stylish and sophisticated! LIV is rectangular and slightly oversized, though not aggressively so.
So, what about quality and price?
2. LIV is handcrafted using high-quality acetate. There are almost 200 steps in the production of these sunglasses, a manual process that can take somewhere between six and eight weeks to complete. They are assembled using 5-barrel hinges and feature shatterproof lenses with full UV400 protection.
3. These beautifully designed, high-quality sunglasses will only set you back $160 AUD — a very reasonable price compared to similar brands! Not to mention with the quality assurance on these bad boys, they’re sure to last you more than just a season.
A brand with an impact
We’ve gone over each of our three points, but we actually discovered there is a fourth. How does the brand you choose to support look beyond business? As part of their Clean Oceans initiative, for each product sold, MESSYWEEKEND donate a portion of their revenue to their partner organisations Plastic Change and ReSea Project, to secure the collection of 100 plastic straws from the ocean! We love a brand that goes above and beyond what is expected of them, as do most of their Trustpilot reviewers, who gave MESSYWEEKEND 4.7 out of 5 stars. Very impressive for a small startup!
